What is a Functional Baseline Evaluation?
The FBE is a series of tests that are used to demonstrate strength and endurance for specific job tasks. It can also be used to objectively and accurately justify job restrictions or the need to continue physical therapy visits. As a result of the FBE it provides objective data for endorsing, modifying or discontinuing treatment components and provides quantitative support for the physician's recommendations.
What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?
The FCE is a series of comprehensive and objective tests that measure a worker's capacity to perform all work related tasks. This evaluation also provides objective data to the physicain or insurance carrier about the worker's ability to perform their job. The FCE is also used as a test to determine if the worker is ready for work conditioning or work hardening.
What is Work Conditioning?
Work conditioning is a undisciplinary approach that addresses the injured worker's physical and functional needs for returning to work. This conditioning is performed in daily sessions of 4 hours per day maximum. It includes total body conditioning and work related activities training. Work conditioning should be prescribed when the patient has plateaued in physical therapy but still needs work related conditioning and training before returning to work.
What is Work Hardening?
Work hardening is an interdisciplinary approach that addresses the injured worker's physical, functional, behavioral and vocational needs. It is performed in daily sessions of 4-8 hours per day and includes total body conditioning, work related activities training and behavioral counseling. Work hardening should be prescribed when an injured worker is ready to progress back to work and needs job specific physical, functional, behavioral and vocational training.
